About the Artist Rikki-Lee Hanna

"The journey so far 🖤"

Hanna Creative Studio is an Aotearoa-based art practice by Rikki-Lee Hanna, born from a deep love of storytelling, symbolism, and connection to place. Each piece is crafted to hold emotion, whether it’s a flash of movement through native bush, the quiet tension of identity, or the intimacy of a face half-remembered.

Raised in Whakatū (Nelson), I’ve always been drawn to creative expression. I studied a Bachelor of Arts & Media, later completing a Master of Sustainable Development Goals, where my passion for humanities, environmentalism, and social justice deepened. Time spent living in Wellington and travelling through Europe continues to shape the way I see and create.

My work moves between media and moods: gold-leafed charcoal animals confronting ideas of power and value, bold acrylic lips, and native birds on glass, caught mid-flight. Each series is rooted in lived experience and a desire to reflect the world not as it is, but as it might be remembered.

I use colour, texture, and movement to explore both the beauty and weight of being human, sometimes playful, sometimes political. My practice is ever-evolving; I’m driven by a love of learning and the need to keep discovering something new.
This isn’t about matching your couch. It’s about finding work that you enjoy everytime you look at it.
